Who Is Kehlani?
Kehlani Ashley Parrish is known mononymously as Kehlani. They first became known as a teenager in the group Poplyfe, which finished fourth on America’s Got Talent in 2011, and then built a solo career in R&B. Wikipedia refers to them with they/them pronouns, so this article uses their name instead of he or she.
Background / Early Life
Kehlani was born in Oakland. Wikipedia says their father died when they were a toddler, and Famous Birthdays says an aunt helped raise them. They wanted to become a dancer when young, but a knee injury ended that plan, according to one fan-reference site. A site I consider less reliable reports that they attended Oakland School for the Arts, so I am not treating that as confirmed.
Career Path
Poplyfe and Solo Mixtapes
Kehlani joined Poplyfe at 14. After the group’s run on America’s Got Talent, they began recording alone in 2013. Their second mixtape, You Should Be Here, came out on April 28, 2015, and Billboard called it the year’s first great R&B album when it debuted at number five on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Albums
Their debut studio album, SweetSexySavage, came out in 2017 to strong reviews. Their fifth album, Kehlani, followed on April 24, 2026.
“Folded” and the 2026 Grammys
“Folded,” released June 11, 2025, became Kehlani’s first top-10 song on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six in January 2026. At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026, it won both Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song. These were Kehlani’s first Grammy wins, after a first nomination about a decade earlier. “I’ve never won anything before,” they said in their acceptance speech. “Folded” also won R&B Song of the Year at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Family and Relationships
Kehlani has a daughter, Adeya Nomi, born in 2019. Famous Birthdays says the child’s other parent is guitarist Javie Young-White. Kehlani came out publicly in an April 2021 TikTok video. Reported past relationships include basketball player Kyrie Irving in 2016 and rapper YG from 2019 to 2020. I found no reliable report on Kehlani’s current relationship status, and I am not including rumors.
Education, Religion, Height, and Net Worth
Kehlani’s education has not been verified in a reliable source. Their religion has not been publicly verified. Height is commonly listed at about 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm), but I found no official figure. Their net worth has not been publicly verified. One website lists $3 million, but it gives no basis, so treat it as an unconfirmed estimate.
